Pope coming to consecrate La Sagrada Familia?!

The Gaudí Sagrada Familia has been in construction since 1882. It was both Gaudí’s most impressive and beloved architectural structure that he had ever designed. Gaudí spent the last years of his life focused on working on the Sagrada Familia to a point where all of his money was spent on the masterpiece and he walked around in rags with not a cent in his pocket. When he was trampled by a tram at age 74 and left on the street by passersby who thought he was a regular beggar, he was sent to a poor and humble hospital where he died, and was only recognized by his close friends. His body is buried in the church and many architects after Gaudí have taken up the calling of completing the masterpiece with the spirit of the original design but with their own modern touches as can be seen by the side of the “Passion” by Josep Maria Subirachs. It has not been easy to closely follow the architectural design of the building considering the original Gaudí blueprints were destroyed in the Spanish Civil War.

The church is scheduled to be completed at around 2026 which seems like an eternity away, but the good news is that there are plans to open the church to services and tours. Before this happens, Barcelona’s archbishop, Cardinal Lluís Martínez Sistach, invited the Pope to consecrate the church before it is opened. The pope is said to have shown much interest and proclaimed the importance of works of art in the path to spirituality. The Pope will be blessing the opening of the church the 7th of November.
